NDIS Check In Calls: A friendly Catch-Up or a Hidden Reassessment?

☎️ One minute it’s a friendly “quick check-in” — the next, you’re being told your NDIS plan is changing.

If you’re a participant — or you support someone who is —  you might have recently received a call from the NDIA. A friendly voice on the other end says they’re just “checking in to see how things are going.”

Sounds simple, right?

Not exactly.

🙅‍♀️ The Check In Trap

These calls might sound like a casual catch up, but they often turn into a stealth reassessment — without your Support Coordinator, without your updated reports and without proper context.

👇🏼 Here’s what we’re seeing happen:

• No one from your support team is present

• Your therapy and support reports haven’t been reviewed

You’re asked a few broad questions like:

• “How’s things going?”

• “Are you still seeing your therapist?”

• “Are things improving?”

Then, before you know it:

“Great, we’ll finalise your new plan and send it out soon!.”

Wait… What?!

Thats not a check-in. That’s a rushed review, informal reassessment — and it can seriously impact your plan review if you’re not prepared.

📝 Here’s What to Do Instead:

If the NDIA calls for a “Check-In”, here’s your step by step play:

• Don’t answer if you’re not ready — or politely end the call

• Contact your Support Coordinator right away

• Collect updated reports from your team (therapist, OT, physio, psychologist etc) — whoever supports your plan

• Speak with an advocate if you need guidance

• Push for a proper plan review — on your terms, with your people

Your plan matters. Don’t let a phone call decide your future.

You deserve to be apart of the process — fully informed, supported, and heard.

If the system tries to rush, you get to slow it down.

Make sure your plan reflects your real needs — with the right evidence and the right support.
